Getting thereHigh on the Bernina Pass, roughly a 2-hour drive from Chur or 20 minutes from St. Moritz. Free parking in the designated pass areas about 200m from the snow-covered lake, or take the Rhaetian Railway directly to Ospizio Bernina station, right on the shoreline.
HazardsHidden rocks under thin snow cover, genuinely freezing alpine temperatures, and real extreme weather shifts โ wind can spike to around 100km/h at times, a documented, real occurrence here, not a worst-case exaggeration. Local rules strictly prohibit riding over cross-country ski tracks or pedestrian winter paths. A guide is worth hiring given the complex mountain rotors, even though the spot itself is genuinely suitable for all levels including beginners.
Best time of dayMidday, once the alpine sun warms the pass and stabilizes the prevailing N-NW airflow. Riding in peak daylight matters for visibility over snow drifts and avoiding the sharper late-afternoon temperature drop.
