Getting thereIbaraki prefecture, about 1.5 hours northeast of Tokyo Haneda or Narita via the Joban Expressway. A car is essential; large paid public lots behind the dunes at Ōarai Sun Beach. The wide sandy beach gives direct, clean entry.
HazardsFaces the open Pacific with a real, heavy shorebreak and rip currents that intensify during typhoon season. Cold water, big wave sets, and strict local rules separating kiters from the heavy density of surfers and jet skis make this genuinely tough for true beginners.
