Getting thereKanagawa prefecture, about 1 hour south of Tokyo via the Shin-Shonan Bypass. A car is preferred for gear; paid parking lots behind the dunes at Southern Beach Chigasaki. The wide beach near the iconic 'C' monument gives direct access.
HazardsFaces the open Pacific with a real, heavy shorebreak and genuine rip current that increases during summer typhoon swells. Not an easy spot for true beginners given the concentration of local surfers, fishing boats anchored in the shallows, and concrete tetrapod breakwaters downwind.
Best time of dayMorning to early afternoon, when regional S or SW winds blow cleanly across the coast. Time sessions with the tide tables for enough sandy beach to launch safely, clear of the concrete promenade walls.
