A small island off Viti Levu's north coast where wind funnels and accelerates between Fiji's two main islands โ genuinely stronger, more consistent trade wind than anywhere else in the country, with a dedicated kite resort and buttery-smooth water behind the reef.

Getting thereFly into Nadi (NAN) and drive 2.5 hours along Kings Road north to Ellington Wharf near Rakiraki. A pre-arranged 15-minute water taxi crosses to Nananu-i-Ra Island โ no cars on the island; parking at Ellington Wharf has a small daily security fee. Access to spots is direct from the island's beachfront resorts.
HazardsThe launch at Safari Lodge/Kite Fiji has shallow coral reef and sharp bommies that can easily damage fins or foils. Be extremely careful at low tide when the reef is heavily exposed, and avoid riding too far into the deep channel where trade-wind acceleration and tidal currents run strong between the islands. Reef booties are strongly advised.
Best time of dayLate morning through afternoon, as trade winds blow reliably side-shore from mid-morning until dusk. High tide is the safest, least stressful window for all levels with good clearance over the inner reef flats.
