Good to know

Getting thereAtlantic coast, about 1.5 hours north of Rabat or 2 hours south of Tangier Airport (TNG) via the A5. A car is essential to reach the Merja Zerga lagoon mouth; free dirt parking near the local fisherman docks. Sandy banks inside the lagoon inlet give the cleanest staging ground.
HazardsThe tidal lagoon outlet generates genuinely dangerous, violent undercurrent and whirlpools that can overwhelm a swimmer. Stay well inside the shallow, protected inner marsh pools, watch for floating debris and local wooden fishing boats, and never venture into the breaking waves at the river mouth.
Best time of dayHigh tide on a rising cycle, filling the clean inner lagoons with flat water and dampening the worst river-mouth current. Late afternoon benefits from coastal thermal enhancement accelerating the Atlantic trades.
