Getting thereFly into San Carlos de Bariloche Airport (BRC) and drive west via the Circuito Chico road to the end of Del Chaparrón road. A rental car is strongly recommended because local public transit buses become overcrowded and skip stops during the peak holiday season. Free public dirt parking is available directly at the road's dead end next to the beach access trail.
HazardsThe glacier-fed lake water remains intensely cold year-round, making a thick wetsuit mandatory to prevent hypothermia. There are no public lifeguards or rescue boats, meaning true beginners should stay close to the shore as the deep drop-offs and heavy wind funneling can quickly blow you downwind. Watch out for hidden tree stumps and large rocks lining the narrow launch shoreline.
Best time of dayThe absolute best window is summer afternoons from mid-October to early May, when the powerful thermal Patagonian wind funnels over the Andes mountains. Mornings are completely calm and unusable for kiting, but the wind builds steadily starting around midday.
