Getting thereMinneapolis-Saint Paul (MSP), then 1.5-2 hours north via Highway 169 to Malmo on the lake's northeast corner. A car is essential; free public parking at the Malmo launch lot. The grassy rigging lawn next to the public boat ramp is the cleanest setup area.
HazardsThe shoreline mixes sand with slippery, bowling-ball-sized rocks — watch your footing on launch. Give a wide berth to motorized boat traffic at the neighboring public ramp, and clear the launch bottleneck quickly once your kite is up. Water temperature can drop fast overnight in early summer or late autumn — real hypothermia risk without a proper wetsuit or drysuit.
Best time of dayLate morning through afternoon, when strong northern or SW frontal systems sweep the lake's 200-square-mile surface. Non-tidal; late July sees an informal local kiteboarding meetup with plenty of launch assistance around.
