Getting thereAbout 35 minutes from Murcia International Airport (RMU) or 1h15 from Alicante (ALC). A car is required to drive the long spit via Gran Vía de la Manga; free parking on various beach access side streets. Spots split between the flat Mar Menor lagoon side and the open Mediterranean side.
HazardsThe Mar Menor side is shallow and safe but tightly restricted by strict summer swimmer zones, and hydrofoil masts will hit bottom close to shore. The Mediterranean side has real shorebreak, strong undercurrents, and exposed rocky slabs — genuinely risky for inexperienced riders in high wind.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when the thermal Garbí (SW) blows cleanly across the lagoon and southern sea beaches. Predictable, warm summer afternoons — but check tide and depth charts on the inside lagoon for foil setups.
