Getting thereFly into Appleton (ATW) or Wittman Regional in Oshkosh (OSH), right on the western shore. A car is needed between launch spots; free parking at Millers Bay in Menominee Park or Asylum Point Park. Millers Bay is the best access for SW winds, with a protected grassy rigging area and direct water access.
HazardsThe lake floor is heavily scattered with sharp zebra mussel shells — thick booties are genuinely necessary, not optional. Concrete breakwalls and rip-rap line the shore with little room for a downwind launch error. Watch for wave chop and sudden, severe offshore wind shifts during passing Midwest frontal systems.
Best time of dayLate afternoon, April-November, especially with strong spring or fall cold fronts. Freshwater and non-tidal; weekdays avoid the local motorboat and jet ski traffic.
