Getting thereAlong the sand spit in Duluth, Minnesota, about 15 minutes from Duluth International Airport (DLH). A car is necessary for the Park Point recreation area; free public parking next to the beach house. The wide beach gives immediate access to the open lake side.
HazardsLake Superior is genuinely freezing year-round — drysuits or heavy winter wetsuits are essential, not optional. Avoid strong easterly frontal passages entirely: brutal shorebreak, big wave sets, and real undertow with no organized rescue support.
Best time of dayMorning to early afternoon, spring and autumn, when strong low-pressure systems track across the northern plains. Brings the most power and wave action, but needs proper thermal gear and real physical conditioning.
