Getting thereA naturally widened stretch of the Mississippi River, about 1h15 southeast of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) via Highway 61. A car is needed; free parking at the Pepin Marina lot or Lake City beach parks. The sandy hook at Stockholm or the grassy lawns of Ohuta Park are the primary entries.
HazardsA major commercial shipping route with cargo barges, paddlewheelers, and fast recreational boats through narrow channels. Steep bluffs cause real wind shadows near shore, alongside genuine river current.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when regional S or NW winds blow cleanly down the river valley axis. Summer afternoons are the most predictable when frontal wind gets a slight thermal boost from the warm inland fields.
