Good to know

Getting thereEastern shore of Lake Ontario near Sandy Creek, New York, about 1 hour north of Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) via I-81. A car is required; free and paid parking at local marinas or Sandy Island Beach State Park. The sandy barrier dunes between the pond and the open lake are the primary entry points.
HazardsThe narrow inlet channel connecting the pond to Lake Ontario generates real, violent current and shifting sandbars. Stay strictly inside the flat, shallow pond side of the spit β€” never venture into the main channel or open lake during heavy autumn NW storms.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when regional NW winds get thermally accelerated across the flat lake. Time sessions with mid-to-high water levels for the safest depth over the inside sand flats while avoiding the worst channel current.
