Getting thereWestern shore of Lake Michigan, about 1 hour north of Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) via I-43. A car is essential to reach Deland Park or King Park beaches; free public parking in large asphalt lots by the water. The beachfront near the North Mole breakwater is the cleanest access.
HazardsGenuinely freezing freshwater temperatures most of the year β thick winter wetsuits or drysuits needed. Avoid strong easterly frontal storms, which bring real freshwater shorebreak, big wave sets, and a strong longshore current.
Best time of dayMorning to early afternoon, spring and autumn, when midwestern low-pressure systems track across the Great Lakes. Brings the most power and wave action, but needs solid conditioning and proper thermal gear.
