Getting thereKern River Valley, about 1 hour east of Bakersfield or 2.5 hours north of Los Angeles via Route 178. A car is necessary; free dirt parking at Auxiliary Dam or Old Cemetery launch sites. Wide clay and pebble banks are the primary staging areas.
HazardsVariable water levels expose hidden tree stumps, old fences, and sharp granite rocks just below the surface. Local thermal funneling drives the wind to a real 25-35kt daily, creating turbulent, gusty conditions close to shore.
Best time of dayAfternoon, May-September, when Owens Valley desert heat drives a powerful thermal wind tunnel through the mountain passes. On by around 1pm, blowing fiercely until sunset β late afternoon is peak.
