Getting thereHeadlands Beach State Park, Mentor, Ohio, about 45 minutes northeast of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) via Route 2. A car is required; a large free public lot runs the length of the beachfront. The eastern end near the Grand River breakwater is the primary launch.
HazardsA real freshwater shorebreak plus a strong lateral current along the stone breakwater wall. Solid upwind steering matters here to avoid getting dragged into the sharp rocks of the harbor pier, especially during heavy autumn NE storms.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when regional N or W winds blow completely unobstructed across the open lake. Summer afternoons benefit from a localized thermal boost as the shallow shoreline heats up, stabilizing the cross-onshore breeze.
