WaterShallow flat lagoon
A shallow coastal lagoon near José Ignacio — genuinely well-suited to freestyle and learning thanks to flat, sheltered water, a completely different character from the open-ocean spots further along this coast.

Getting thereAbout 40 minutes east of Punta del Este or 2 hours from Montevideo Airport (MVD) via Route 10. A car is needed; free parking in the dirt clearings by the circular lagoon bridge or local kite school shacks. The sandy fingers inside the lagoon mouth give immediate flat-water access.
HazardsKnee-to-waist-deep standing areas are common, but hydrofoils will strike the shallow sandy bottom close to the banks. Stay clear of the protected bird sanctuary sectors per local zoning, and watch for real tidal current near the narrow ocean inlet.
Best time of dayAfternoon, November-March, when the hot Uruguayan interior triggers a reliable thermal sea breeze from the ESE, peaking post-midday for steady side-onshore conditions across the flats.
