Getting thereRemote Duqm coastal road, about 4.5 hours south of Muscat. A high-clearance 4x4 loaded with extra fuel, water, and sand recovery gear is completely mandatory for the soft white sand fields; free wild camping on the salt flats. Staging is directly from the sand tracks where the dunes meet the ocean.
HazardsA genuinely extreme tidal range exposes massive shallow sand flats and sharp shell beds at low tide. No localized rescue infrastructure or mobile signal here at all — wear thick footwear against hidden debris and watch the changing tides.
Best time of dayAfternoon, May-September, when desert heat triggers a strong thermal suction pulling the summer monsoon breeze cleanly across the flats. After 1pm gives the most reliable onshore/cross-onshore tracking, ideally with a rising tide.
