Getting thereOn the Portugal-Spain border in Huelva, about 1h15 from Faro Airport (FAO) or 1.5 hours from Seville (SVQ). A car is essential to reach the island via the bridge from Ayamonte; free and paid lots along Paseo de los Gavilanes. Main access is the San Bruno beach sector near the river mouth.
HazardsA massive tidal range creates real current near the Guadiana river mouth and exposes shallow sandbanks. Strong incoming or outgoing tides can sweep you from your launch area or pull you into the deep navigation channels — worth timing carefully.
Best time of dayMid-to-high tide — low tide dries out the inner lagoons and creates turbulent transitions near the river mouth. Afternoon is best when Atlantic winds get a thermal boost from the hot Andalusian interior.
