WaterFlat, protected bay

Chile's northernmost major kite destination, in the heart of the Atacama Desert โ€” reliable southwest trade wind amplified by desert thermals, flat water in a protected bay, with multiple kite schools and a warm, arid climate that's a world apart from Chile's colder south.

Good to know

Getting thereAbout 30 minutes from Diego Aracena International Airport (IQQ) along coastal Highway 1. A car or city taxi provides easy transit; public street parking and dirt lots along the Playa Cavancha or Playa Brava promenades. Playa Cavancha gives the cleanest sandy launch, away from the rocky reefs.
HazardsSharp, shallow volcanic rock shelves flank the outer edges of the main bays, plus high concentrations of holiday swimmers in summer. Watch for a real open-ocean shorebreak and strong longshore current along the urban coastline โ€” no dedicated public rescue boat infrastructure.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when Atacama Desert heat triggers a clean SSW thermal. Builds consistently post-midday for an excellent cross-onshore window across the open ocean swell lines.
