Getting thereLocated in the Elqui Valley, roughly a 50-minute drive east of La Serena Airport (LSC) via Route 41. A car is completely mandatory to reach this inland reservoir, with free public parking available in the dirt lots near the Gualliguaica village entrance. The wide, dusty clay and pebble banks provide the primary launch and staging zones.
HazardsThe reservoir features immediate deep water drop-offs and a hard clay bottom that can be slippery during launches. True beginners must exercise severe caution as the local thermal funneling effect causes the wind to blow fiercely at 25-35 knots daily, creating highly turbulent, gusty conditions close to the mountain walls with no rescue boat infrastructure.
Best time of dayAfternoon, from September to April, when the extreme temperature differential between the cold Pacific coast and the baking Andes mountains creates a powerful wind tunnel. The breeze turns on like clockwork after 13:00, reaching peak stability and strength by mid-afternoon.
