Getting thereAbout 15 minutes south of Matanzas, requiring a car for the steep, unpaved gravel paths and dirt trails down to the coast. Free parking on the dirt tracks behind the black sand dunes; the open beach next to the prominent offshore islet gives direct access. A high-clearance car or 4x4 is preferred.
HazardsA fully open ocean setting with a real shorebreak, dangerous undercurrent, and turbulent wind pockets caused by the large offshore rock formation just upwind. True beginners should avoid this entirely — wind blows 25-35kt, deep water starts instantly, and there's no localized rescue infrastructure.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when the SW trade wind gets heavily accelerated by thermal compression along the rugged coastal cliffs. Late afternoon gives the most powerful, consistent wind for advanced wave-riding and wind-foiling.
