Good to know

Getting thereInside Indiana Dunes National Park in Gary, Indiana, about 45 minutes southeast of Chicago via I-90. A car is necessary; the dedicated Greenwood Beach paid public lot. The wide beach in front of the historic aquatorium building is the primary access.
HazardsShifting underwater sandbars and strong longshore current develop quickly during NW swells. Strict seasonal beach regulations keep kiters separated from crowded public swimming and picnic areas in peak summer.
Best time of dayAfternoon, once solar heating over the Indiana dunes draws in a stable NNW lake breeze. Post-midday gives steady onshore/side-onshore conditions, avoiding the light, unpredictable mornings.
