Good to know

Getting thereEastern shore of Lake Michigan, about 45 minutes west of Grand Rapids Airport (GRR) via M-104. A car is needed; free and paid parking in the large lots at Grand Haven State Park. The wide beach south of the harbor pier is the primary access.
HazardsThe concrete harbor piers create real localized wind turbulence and dangerous rip currents pulling toward the structure. Stay well south of the pier, and use extra caution during autumn cold fronts β€” powerful onshore wind, freezing water, and big shorebreak then.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when regional westerlies get thermally accelerated by the hot West Michigan dunes β€” steady side-onshore, notably better than the calm mornings.
