Good to know

Getting thereCorpus Christi (CRP), then about 20 minutes northeast across the Harbor Bridge to Portland. A car is necessary; free parking at the end of Wildcat Drive inside Violet Andrews Park, a short walk to the grassy rigging lawn.
HazardsWater stays waist-deep for hundreds of yards, but the shoreline has sharp rocks and concrete rip-rap β€” a downwind error on launch can mean a hard landing there. Stay well upwind of the highway infrastructure and beach obstacles. Give right-of-way to the frequent commercial kayak and windsurf school groups sharing the bay.
Best time of dayAfternoon, April-September, as the Texas thermal sea breeze pushes wind to a consistent 18-25kt. Friday evenings around 6pm are popular for organized community bay-crossing downwinders to North Beach.
