Good to know

Getting thereFly into Nelson (NSN), under 10 minutes to Tahunanui Beach. A car helps for gear; a large free public parking lot sits directly at the Tahunanui Recreation Reserve. Best access for kiters is the 'Back Beach' area, a dedicated zone away from general swimmers.
HazardsBack Beach borders an active commercial shipping channel โ€” strictly respect the legal maritime exclusion zones to stay clear of large container ships. Tidal currents inside the estuary mouth can be swift enough to drag you downwind faster than you can swim against them. Watch for shifting sandbanks and seasonal beachgoer crowds.
Best time of dayAfternoon, November-April, when the sea breeze combines with thermal valley draws for a reliable 15-25kt wind. An incoming mid-to-high tide fills the estuary with clean water while slowing the outgoing current.
