Getting thereIn Auckland, fly into AKL and drive north across the Harbour Bridge to the Bayswater peninsula (30-40 minutes). A car is needed; free parking at Shoal Bay Reserve or the adjacent Bayswater Marina lot. Best access is directly from the grass rigging area inside the reserve.
HazardsThe bay is an extremely shallow tidal mudflat lined with hidden rocks, shell beds, and debris. If you drop your kite or lose your board at low tide, expect to be stranded in deep, sticky mud and forced to wade a long way through oyster shells โ a genuine, unpleasant risk, not just an inconvenience. The spot is closely bordered by a busy motorway and fences, leaving little room for error downwind.
Best time of dayTwo hours either side of high tide is the only rideable window โ the bay empties into dry mudflats at low tide. Works best in the afternoon when standard NW or W wind fronts fill the harbor.
