A volcanic island in the middle of Central America's largest lake โ€” two dedicated kite schools operate here through the dry season, with a dramatic twin-volcano backdrop and far fewer crowds than the coast.

Good to know

Getting thereInside Lake Nicaragua โ€” a 2.5-hour drive from Managua Airport (MGA) to San Jorge port, then a 1-hour public ferry to Moyogalpa. A high-clearance car or 4x4 is recommended for the Santo Domingo beach spit; free dirt parking directly on the sand. The narrow spit of Playa Santo Domingo is the primary access.
HazardsMassive, open-lake wind chop can mimic ocean waves with short, punchy periods. Wind blows strongly side-shore or cross-offshore, the bottom drops off into deep water quickly, and there's genuinely no organized rescue boat presence on the island.
Best time of dayAll day, December-April, when Caribbean trade winds accelerate across the lake basin. Morning gives the cleanest, most consistent tracking before midday heating turns the breeze gusty near the volcanic peaks.
