Getting thereSoutheastern tip of Havre-Aubert island, Magdalen Islands, about 30 minutes from the main ferry terminal. A car is required for the unpaved tracks to the historical site of La Grave; free parking in gravel lots near the beach entrance. The long Sandy Hook spit gives an essentially unlimited rigging zone.
HazardsAn open gulf setting with a real, heavy shorebreak and rip current running along the outer sandspit. True beginners should avoid the outer ocean side entirely — wind blows side-offshore or offshore over the point, with genuinely no rescue craft available on the wave side.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when regional S or E winds get thermally accelerated across the flat sandspit. Mid-tide gives the best balance of flat lagoons behind the sandbars and safe launching space away from the dunes.
