Good to know

Getting thereA domestic flight from Caracas (CCS) to El Gran Roque island, then a daily 10-20 minute local taxi-boat to riding keys like Francisquí or Madrisquí. No cars on the islands — all travel is on foot to the boat docks, where park entry fees are paid on arrival.
HazardsExtremely shallow coral reef heads and sharp sea urchins can cause immediate injury or slice fins at low tide. Generally beginner-friendly, but wind blows off-the-beach or cross-offshore at many keys — a pre-arranged boat rescue with a local school is genuinely important, not optional, given how easy it is to drift between islands.
Best time of dayMid-morning through afternoon, December-June, when trade winds blow continuously at peak strength. Arrive early with the water taxi to secure beach space before the midday sun and tourist boats.
