Getting thereNorth Bay, Ontario, about 3.5 hours north of Toronto via Highway 11. A car is essential; free asphalt parking at Sunset Park or Marathon Beach along the waterfront. Sunset Park on the eastern shore gives the most direct, spacious staging ground.
HazardsExtensive shallow sandbanks stretching hundreds of meters are great for beginners but a real hazard for hydrofoils. Water is genuinely freezing outside mid-summer — bring a thick wetsuit — and watch for a moderate shorebreak during high westerly wind.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when regional W or SW winds blow cleanly across the open lake. Summer afternoons are most reliable with a slight thermal boost from the warm inland Ontario fields.
