Getting thereLocated in the Valle del Cauca, roughly a 1.5-hour drive north of Cali International Airport (CLO) via the highway to Buenaventura. A car is required to transport gear, with paid parking available at the official public eco-parks like Entrada 4 or entrada 5. The wide grassy lawns sloping down to the water provide the standard staging grounds.
HazardsThe lake is surrounded by steep mountain topography that generates incredibly violent wind tunnels where the breeze regularly exceeds 25 or 30 knots. It is highly physically demanding for true beginners due to the immediate deep water, sudden chop, and the total lack of shallow standing areas or dedicated public rescue boats.
Best time of dayAfternoon, from May to September, when a massive thermal engine drives steady western winds like clockwork through the mountain passes. The wind turns on precisely around 13:00 and blows fiercely until sunset, making late afternoon the peak window for consistent riding.
