Getting thereAbout 3 hours from Liberia International Airport (LIR) or 3.5 hours from San José (SJO). A car — preferably a 4x4 — is essential to reach the launch areas on the western edge near Tilarán, with free dirt parking behind the water at local launch sites. The area near Tico Wind or the Rock gives the most direct, reliable rigging access.
HazardsWind blows relentlessly hard, often exceeding 25-30kt, generating short, steep freshwater chop. Genuinely challenging for true beginners — no shallow standing areas, immediate deep water, and downwind drift leads to densely forested, rocky shores with very limited rescue options.
Best time of dayAll day, December-April, when high-pressure trade wind systems funnel through the continental divide. Early morning gives the most stable wind before solar mountain heating creates real turbulence and gustiness later in the afternoon.
