WaterFlat

Costa Rica's flagship kite destination, right at the Nicaraguan border — a small island and land outcropping keep the water flat even when the wind is howling, and side-onshore wind here regularly hits 20-40 knots. Multiple beaches within the bay (Playa Copal, Papaturro, Coyotera) each host their own kite school.

Good to know

Getting thereNorthern Costa Rica near the Nicaraguan border, about 1.5 hours north of Liberia International Airport (LIR). A car, preferably high-clearance, is required for the unpaved tracks to Playa Copal; free parking directly on the sand behind the kite resorts. The beach in front of local kiteboarding schools is the primary entry.
HazardsWind blows relentlessly day and night, often 25-35kt — a genuinely intense environment. Real physical struggle for true beginners given the power, sudden heavy chop, and small rays commonly buried in the shallow sand — shuffle your feet.
Best time of dayMid-morning through late afternoon, November-April, when high-pressure trade wind systems funnel through the continental divide gaps. Stable all day — plan around mid-tide for the widest safe launching space.
