Good to know

Getting thereFly into Winnipeg (YWG) and drive about 1 hour north via Highway 59 into Grand Beach Provincial Park. A car is necessary; a Manitoba park vehicle permit is mandatory (around $9.50 CAD/day online or at the gate). East Beach is the better access point for kiters โ€” open areas and a designated pet beach away from the busier main boardwalk.
HazardsLake Winnipeg's size means sustained NW wind builds real fetch, producing heavy breaking waves and powerful onshore shorebreak. Kiting is prohibited within the crowded West Beach swimmer flags in peak summer, and there's no active water rescue craft. Sudden offshore shifts can happen with local frontal changes โ€” a real deep-water stranding risk.
Best time of dayLate morning through afternoon when frontal systems or spring/fall lake-effect temperature differentials maximize wind. Off-peak weekdays give much more room to safely lay out lines.
