Getting thereSouthwestern tip of Crete, about 1.5 hours from Chania International Airport (CHQ) via a narrow, winding mountain road. A car is mandatory; a large paid municipal dirt lot sits right behind the dunes. The shallow sand lagoon between the mainland and the island is the primary staging area.
HazardsBeautiful flat water inside the lagoon, but heavily crowded with day-trippers in summer, leaving little legal launch space. The prevailing wind blows strongly offshore or side-offshore — real risk for true beginners of getting blown out past the shallow lagoon reef into the deep Mediterranean.
Best time of dayMorning, June-September, before the daily tourist buses arrive from Chania. Early sessions get the cleanest Meltemi before afternoon heat brings light gusts.
