Near Patras on the Greek mainland, in the shadow of the Rio-Antirrio bridge โ€” pro kitesurfers including Youri Zoon and Paula Novotna have trained here, drawn by genuinely glassy flat water that's become something of a freestyle and speed-riding proving ground.

Good to know

Getting thereNear Patras in the Peloponnese, about 45 minutes from Araxos Airport (GPA) or 2 hours west of Athens via the A8. A car is required; free parking in the dirt lots at the base of the lighthouse spit. The tiny gravel point gives a dual-sided launch for distinct wind directions.
HazardsThe launch is exceptionally narrow, sharp gravel, bordered by concrete breakwaters and deep water on both sides โ€” no room for errors. Watch for real current funneling through the narrow Gulf of Corinth, and the offshore wind angle on the flat-water side.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when clear summer days trigger an intense thermal draw through the narrow gulf gap. Usually on after midday, giving a glass-flat speed strip on the leeward side of the spit for advanced freeriders.
