Getting thereAbout 15 minutes south of Walvis Bay town center or 45 minutes from Swakopmund. A car is required; free dirt parking right next to the water at the lagoon promenade or near the yacht club. The wide sandbank spit at the end of the lagoon road gives direct entry.
HazardsWind blows genuinely offshore or side-offshore at extreme velocity here — this is one of the world's premier speed-kiting locations, home to world speed records, and that reputation is built directly on this exact wind character (often 30-40kt). True beginners should avoid this entirely — water is freezing, and there's no organized rescue craft outside of official speed challenge events.
Best time of dayAfternoon, October-March, when desert heat triggers a powerful thermal suction pulling the cold Atlantic breeze into the lagoon. Builds consistently post-midday for a world-class, ultra-smooth flat-water speed strip.
