Getting thereAbout 170km north of La Tontouta International Airport, a 2-hour drive up the west coast via Route 1 to Bourail. A car is essential; ample free parking along the coastal road next to the beach campgrounds. The beach zone in front of the youth hostel or camping areas gives immediate access.
HazardsThe large, shallow lagoon is bordered by a sharp barrier reef wall creating strong tidal currents through the reef passes. Low tide reveals shallow coral heads and seagrass beds that can catch fins and foils and cause painful scrapes — time sessions carefully.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when thermal trade winds accelerate off the heat of the main Grande Terre landmass for consistent cross-onshore wind. Midday to late afternoon also gives the best sun angle for spotting shallow coral in the water.
