Getting thereChicago's north side, about 30 minutes from O'Hare International Airport (ORD) via the Kennedy Expressway and Lake Shore Drive. Public transit is an option, though a car helps for gear; paid municipal parking adjacent to the beach. The designated dog beach and northern sand spit are the exclusive, legally mandated launch zone.
HazardsThe Chicago Park District regulates this spot closely — kiters need to hold a valid local association credential and stay strictly within the buoy-marked wind sports zone or risk real fines. Heavy summer crowds, concrete harbor jetties downwind, and a real freshwater shorebreak during strong NE winds add to the challenge for true beginners.
Best time of dayAfternoon, when regional S or E winds get a lake-effect thermal boost on warm spring and summer days. Weekdays are strongly preferred over weekends to avoid heavy beach and foot traffic.
