Getting thereSouthern end of Lake Monteynard near Mayres-Savel, about 1 hour south of Grenoble via the A51 and mountain tracks. A car is essential; paid parking at the Savel public campsite and beach lot. The open grassy bank near the boat ramp is the main access.
HazardsNarrower than the north sector and bordered by steep canyon walls that create real wind turbulence with even a slight shift in the breeze. Watch for the immediate transition to deep water and fast-moving passenger tour boats — no shallow standing safety zones here either.
Best time of dayAfternoon, as the alpine thermal engine builds like clockwork around 1pm and blows steadily down the canyon until sunset. Slightly warmer air than the north end, but genuinely requires advanced upwind skill to clear the canyon narrows safely.
