Getting thereFly into Colombo (CMB) and take a 3.5-4 hour private taxi or shuttle north to the Kalpitiya peninsula. A car isn't necessary once there โ local operators use 4x4 trucks or tuk-tuks across the dunes. Free access to the main lagoon, with parking directly on the sandy spit separating lagoon from ocean.
HazardsThe interior lagoon is shallow and generally safe, but has hidden wooden stakes from fishing traps and localized oyster beds near the edges. Peak season brings heavy kiter and student crowds, raising the risk of line tangles. The ocean side has real shorebreak and rip currents needing advanced skill.
Best time of dayAll day across two monsoon seasons โ SW monsoon (May-September) blows a relentless 20-30kt, while NE monsoon (December-February) brings lighter afternoon thermals. Mornings are the smoothest, least crowded time inside the lagoon.
