Good to know

Getting thereOuter Banks, North Carolina, roughly 2.5-3 hours from Norfolk International Airport (ORF) via Highway 12. A car is mandatory between spots; free parking at Cape Hatteras National Seashore access ramps or soundside launches like Real Slick. The Slick or Canadian Hole have the cleanest soundside access.
HazardsPamlico Sound has vast knee-deep flats hiding duck blinds, sharp oyster beds, and submerged wooden stakes β€” thick booties matter here. The scale of the shallows means it's genuinely easy to end up stranded miles from your launch point; the ocean side has real shorebreak and rip currents.
Best time of dayMidday to afternoon, when thermal sea breezes enhance spring/summer southerly winds, or all-day frontal passages in autumn. The sound works on almost any wind direction, while the ocean needs side-onshore alignment specifically.
