Getting thereDingle Peninsula, County Kerry, about 1h15 west of Kerry Airport (KIR) via the N86 and Connor Pass roads. A car is completely necessary for the coastal dunes; free dirt parking at the end of the unpaved lane at Spillane's beach access. The 20km sandy crescent bay gives direct entry.
HazardsA world-class, high-intensity Atlantic wave spot with a real, brutal shorebreak, big rolling wave sets, and freezing water year-round. True beginners should avoid this beach entirely during heavy winter swells — deep water starts quickly, genuine rip current develops, and there are no organized safety rescue craft available.
Best time of dayAfternoon, autumn through spring, when powerful low-pressure Atlantic fronts track cleanly across the coast. Mid-tide on a rising cycle gives the best balance of wide sandy beach for safe launching and clean, organized wave faces.
